Pouring the clay

Step 1 Pouring the clay

The clay mix, known as the 'slip', is poured into the mould by a Master Craftsmen and left to stand for several minutes before pouring the excess slip out.

 Breaking thr mould

Step 2 Breaking the mould

The piece is then left for some time before the mould is taken apart and the resulting piece is then presented to the 'sponger'.

 Sponge the piece smooth

Step 3 Sponging the piece

The 'sponger' then wipes the piece taking care to smooth the edges.

 Mugs pre-kiln

Step 4 Loading the kiln

The kiln is then loaded, firing the piece to a temperature of approximately 1200 degrees centigrade.

This takes the piece to the "bisque" stage - known in the trade as biscuit.

Vibro the pieces smooth

Step 5 Vibro the piece

Then we 'Vibro' the piece in a rotating tub which contains wood and china pieces.
This makes the piece extremely smooth.

Dipping the piece into the glaze

Step 6 Glazing the piece

The piece is then dipped into a china glaze, and then left to dry for 24 hours.
